Put a recipe on the menu and set a price
Make a recipe available for sale, give it a sale price and a cost target, and watch its margin.
In Chefy a menu item is a recipe that you sell. You do not build a menu item separately: you take a recipe you have already costed and tell Chefy how it is sold. From then on the recipe shows its sale price and cost of goods alongside its recipe cost, and it can start collecting sales.
You need a recipe with at least one input and a default output. See Build a recipe from scratch.
Add a recipe to the menu
-
Open Recipes and open the recipe you want to sell.
-
Click Add to Menu.
-
Tell Chefy how it is sold:
- Sale price: what a customer pays.
- Sale unit: which unit of the default output one sale is. If the default output is measured in serves or slices, pick that; if a sale is a whole batch, pick that. Chefy uses this to work out the cost of one sale from the cost of the recipe.
- COGS target: the cost of goods you want to stay under, as a percentage of the sale price. Chefy alerts you when the recipe's real cost breaches it.
-
Save. The recipe page now shows its sale price and its current COGS in the strip at the top, with how close it is to the target.
What changes once it is on the menu
- The strip at the top of the recipe shows the Sale Price and the current COGS percentage, so you can see the margin you are getting and how much room there is before you hit the target. When an ingredient price changes and pushes COGS over the target, Chefy flags it.
- In the Recipes list the item is marked as for sale, shows its sale price, and once sales start arriving, a small sparkline of sales over time. The list has an Over Cogs Only filter to find every item that has breached its target.
Sales themselves, whether imported or from a connected point of sale, are covered separately.
